The following policy applies to copyright disputes between members and/or third parties. In issues regarding member to member or member to third party copyright disputes, the following policy applies: The SDP Code of Ethics states that the Society and its members shall “be aware of and comply with copyright laws, both as they pertain to the misuse of artwork created by another and as they pertain to the reproduction of patterns and drawings, books, designs, and all published materials.” Nowhere in the Code of Ethics is it found that the SDP Board of Directors or staff shall actively seek out cases of copyright abuse or infraction. It is likewise beyond the authority of SDP to pass judgment on any such alleged copyright violation that might be brought to the attention of an SDP representative. Copyright disputes arising either between SDP members or between members and nonmembers must be investigated and adjudicated by the appropriate civil or governmental authority, and it is the sole responsibility of the complainant to pursue such an investigation: SDP shall not be responsible for setting the wheels of investigation in motion. The SDP Board of Directors may consider punitive action against a member on the grounds of copyright abuse or infraction only after the member has been found to be in violation of copyright laws by the appropriate civil or governmental authority. Please contact the SDP President or Executive Director for any copyright disputes regarding SDP sponsored programs, publications, or events. Understanding Copyright
